As there are so many different substances that one can get addicted to, and as there are so many different kinds and types of addictions, and as there are so many different ways in which one can be addicted, it follows from that that there should be multiple different ways to confront and tackle an addiction. This is needed because a rehab center has to be able to address all of these different aspects of addiction in any client who comes to them for help. The most successful addiction recovery method includes techniques and methods that involve an extensive and all-inclusive course though rehab that brings with it several different treatment methods.
One of the most successful and popular ways of addressing addiction in the nation today, and one which Behavioral Rehabilitation Services is proud to offer, is SMART Recovery. SMART Recovery, (also known as Self-Management and Recovery Training), is a very useful and rapidly expanding, international, non-profit, organization which provides assistance to individuals seeking abstinence and sobriety from addictive behaviors and chemical dependence problems. The approach as it is used is totally and completely secular and scientifically based. It uses a very new-age, acceptable, and pleasant, non-confrontational, motivational, behavioral and cognitive method towards treating people with addiction.
Individuals who want to participate in SMART Recovery meetings on an outpatient basis learn various recovery methods that are all derived from evidence-based addiction treatments. An even better way to engage in SMART Recovery is to do so in an inpatient rehab setting that offers SMART Recovery. In this way, one will receive a much more intensive and involved treatment approach that really goes over the issues of addiction and works on all of them from multiple different angles and directions.
The Science Behind SMART
SMART Recovery is based on scientific knowledge. SMART Recovery does not try to convince anyone of anything religious or belief-based, and it is not intended to convert anyone to anything. SMART Recovery is a universally applicable treatment method that quite literally anyone from any religious following or faith can engage in. The idea behind SMART Recovery is that it is intended to evolve as scientific knowledge also evolves.
The program is a conglomeration of many different techniques and addiction rehabilitation methods. For example, it uses principles of motivational interviewing found in things like Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), and techniques taken from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, (CBT) too, particularly in the version called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, (REBT). Those are just the three, main principles behind SMART Recovery. The program also uses other methods of scientifically validated research on treatment and recovery.
As far as the focus of SMART Recovery goes, the organization’s program emphasizes four, main areas, (called the 4-Point Program), in the process of recovery. These include the following:
Coping with Urges
The “SMART Toolbox”, as it is called is a collection of various MET, CBT and REBT methods, (or “tools”), which address the 4 Points. The core, driving principle behind SMART Recovery is to give clients a very well rounded approach to addiction treatment that enables them to tackle their addiction crisis from many different angles and aspects.
SMART Recovery has nearly unlimited focuses and uses for those who engage in it. For example, SMART Recovery can be used as a by-itself, stand-alone primary recovery support program for those seeking help recovering from addictions. By this is meant that people can go to rehab centers that provide SMART Recovery and SMART Recovery alone. However, it can be used in conjunction with other rehabilitation techniques and it does not insist on being exclusive. This is how it is used at Behavioral Rehabilitation Services. We use it as another aspect and factor to add to our very inclusive and detailed program, and we encourage our clients to involve themselves in SMART Recovery as well as in other types of treatment that we offer too.
As for the intricacies of the SMART Recovery program, the program does not use the traditional twelve step approach that is the makeup and the basis of the various “Anonymous” self-help groups that have been around for ages. SMART Recovery does not disagree with or go against these approaches; rather it simply offers an alternative to them.
The core, driving principle behind SMART Recovery is that those who deliver it and those who practice it believe that each and every individual must find his/her own path to recovery and sobriety that will work best for him or her, and no one course of action will be deemed unacceptable or frowned down upon by anyone involved in SMART Recovery. For some participants for example, that path to sobriety and freedom may indeed include 12-step programs, or other self-empowering groups that the individual wants to take part in.
Although the SMART Recovery approach itself does look quite a bit different and operate very differently from each of these approaches in its own, various ways, it does not necessarily exclude them or deem them, “unfit”, or “unworkable”. For our consideration of the SMART Recovery program here at BRS, this is one of the things we liked about it the most. We noticed that it was not only by itself a very workable and successful method of treatment, but it also worked incredibly well with other approaches to treatment too, and it definitely made a difference in people’s lives. We were quick to include it in our program for that reason, and sure enough we have seen it provide exemplary help to thousands of our clients and it really does work well with other programs too, further increasing its overall value to us and to others.
SMART Recovery at Behavioral Rehabilitation Services
Our staff at BRS are proud to offer SMART Recovery within our facility. We stand strong as an exclusive, executive rehabilitation treatment center, and we consider it to be our personal privilege to offer the best of the best when it comes to addiction rehabilitation methods. SMART Recovery is one of the best there is and it has proven to be immensely effective for hundreds of thousands of recovering individuals nation-wide. For these reasons we apply it in our program and we will continue to use it for any and all clients who want to engage in it.
SMART Recovery really helps people. It not only addresses and eradicates addiction, but it also sets an individual up for a much more successful experience in life after treatment. SMART Recovery is a powerful rehabilitation technique that we are more than happy to include.
