Energy Drinks:  Are They an Obsession or an Addiction?  

Is it possible to become addicted to something like an energy drink?  It’s an established scientific fact that too much caffeine and sugar can cause a person serious health problems.  Plus, they can develop a dependence on the substances. To determine whether you have an energy drink addiction let’s look at the definition of addiction:

Addiction is the persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

This is the definition of an obsession:

If you have an obsession, you’re totally fixated on something and unhealthily devoted to it.

The definitions seem to be quite similar.  Of course, there are many other substances to get addicted to that are much more dangerous.  But, whether we choose to call it an energy drink addiction or obsession or dependence, the fact remains that Americans consume millions of these drinks daily.  In 2017, more than 2.98 billion dollars were spent on these products.

Signs That You Have an Energy Drink Addiction

No one likes to think that they aren’t in complete control of their behavior.

But, if you look at the signs of energy drink addiction listed below, you might discover that you do, indeed, have a problem:

  • Do you feel the need to begin your day with an energy drink?
  • Are you consuming several of the drinks throughout the day?
  • If you don’t get your usual number of energy drinks in a day, do you become irritable?
  • Have you been late for work because you can’t resist stopping to get the beverage?
  • Do you get a headache if you don’t get your usual amount of the drink?
  • Have you started substituting energy drinks for a good night’s sleep?
  • Are friends and family concerned about your over-consumption?
  • Do you think you can’t concentrate at work without the drinks?
  • Even after drinking them do you still feel tired?

If you identify with more than a few of the above, you should consider cutting down or quitting energy drinks altogether.  If the drinks are creating more of a negative impact as time goes by, your health could suffer.

Consequences of Energy Drink Abuse

Here are some of the side effects and consequences you could experience with continued abuse of energy drinks:

  1. Buying several a day can be a financial burden.
  2. The sugar content can contribute to type 2 diabetes and weight gain.
  3. The caffeine can cause you to feel jittery. It can also interfere with sleep.
  4. You may find yourself wanting something stronger as a stimulant.
  5. Drinking large quantities of the product can cause caffeine overdose.
  6. Dependence on the drinks can compromise your daily functionality.

Energy drinks haven’t been around long enough for us to fully understand the implications of long-term use.  But, we do know the risks involved with high levels of caffeine and sugar. With that in mind, it’s not difficult to theorize that these drinks can be dangerous to your health.

Although it is difficult to overdose on the amount of caffeine in coffee or other products, the amount of caffeine in an energy drink can be harmful.  In fact, according to the Center for Food Safety Adverse Event Reporting System, 18 deaths have been attributed to the 5-Hour Energy drinks and Monster drinks.  The Attorney General’s Office is conduction an investigation into this matter.

How to Get a Healthy Energy Boost

Humans are creatures of habit.  When our energy is low, we usually go for the tried and true solutions such as caffeine and sugar.  An extra cup of coffee, a handful of candy or cookies, or energy drink all give us that instant burst of energy. But, they all come with the inevitable “crash.”  And the cycle continues. There is a solution to this unhealthy habit.
