SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a self-empowering addiction recovery support group where individuals learn tools and skills that will help them with their addiction recovery based on the latest scientific research. The program has a worldwide community and includes free, science-based help groups. No matter what the individual’s addiction or addictive behavior is, they can benefit from SMART recovery. SMART recovery has in-person meetings around the world and holds daily meetings online. It is a completely different program and is unlike several other rehabilitation programs.
SMART Recovery Program
SMART recovery has their own signature four-point program and they offer tools for each point in the program. The four-point program includes:
Building and Maintaining Motivation: This is done by using SMART tools, such as ABC, brainstorming, and CBA (Cost/Benefit Analysis). The purpose of this step is to build up the rational voice and get rid of the enemy voice that encourages an individual to use drugs or other substances.
Coping with Urges: Believes people can be in control of their urges instead of being affected by them. SMART recovery also believes these urges can eventually go away.
Managing Thoughts, Behaviors and Feelings: Focuses on the positive by developing a VACI (Vital Absorbing Creative Interest), such as drawing or exercise, and progressing towards a positive goal.
Living a Balanced Life: Provides participants with problem solving tools, including ABCs to combat irrational beliefs, CBA, enhanced frustration tolerance, journaling, relaxation, brainstorming and planning.
On top of the four-point program, they have a seven-step model that helps the individual change their behaviors. The seven-step model includes the following:
Pre-contemplation: The individual doesn’t realize they have a problem and are in denial.
Contemplation: The person looks at their addiction and weighs the pros and cons.
Determination / Preparation: The person completes a “Change Plan Worksheet.”
Action: The individual finds new ways to cope with their addiction.
Maintenance: The individual regularly uses their changed behaviors and wants to stay sober.
Relapse: The person starts to use drugs or other substances again. SMART recovery believes this is a regular part of everyone’s healing journey and can be a learning experience for the individual.
Termination: The individual has completed and graduates from SMART recovery.
This seven-step model doesn’t have to occur in sequence. For example, a person can be at step one through four, then is at step seven and is then at step four. Additionally, SMART recovery offers three forms of therapy, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)
Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)
Throughout the program, SMART recovery teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance and provides meetings that are educational and supportive. Additionally, participants learn techniques so they can change their behaviors and actions in order to live a satisfying, fulfilling life. One of the best parts about SMART recovery is that their program evolves as new scientific knowledge in addiction recovery is discovered. This means that participants will always have the most modern program available.
Furthermore, SMART recovery believes that their participants are in control of their addiction and are not powerless. It also believes that participants can stand the urges, the urges pass and that accepting urges is a normal part of changing.
Addictive behavior is defined as being overly involved with substance use. This includes alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, food, drugs and prescribed or over-the-counter medications. There are different levels of addiction. For example, a person addicted to caffeine won’t have the same level of addiction compared to a person addicted to heroin. However, they are both considered to be addictive behaviors since the person is overly involved with the substance. When addictive behavior is spotted, it is important to seek help immediately so the person can get the proper treatment.
SMART Recovery at Behavioral Rehabilitation Services
While treatment programs do many things to help an addict get clean and sober, finding the underlying problem that caused the substance abuse is what treatment is for. At Behavioral Rehabilitation Services, we know that not every rehabilitation facility is the same. This is why we have created a drug and alcohol addiction program that can include different types of programs, such as SMART recovery, and is specifically designed to adapt to each client’s needs and wants.
Our facility is located in the best location that provides a very comfortable and secure place, and is far away from the stress of daily life. Our clients are able to relax, let go of their troubles and just focus on their sobriety and getting clean.
